OMAHA, Neb. – In the same week that she was named BIG EAST Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, Creighton women’s tennis player Jennie Hartjes earned recognition off the court as a 2014 Goldwater Scholar in recognition of her academic achievements in the natural sciences.

Hartjes is just one of three Creighton students to attain the scholarship this year that provides up to $7,500 annually for undergraduate study. Creighton has had 15 Goldwater scholars in the past 11 years.

A junior from St. Paul, Minn., Hartjes is majoring in biochemistry and hopes to earn a doctorate in nutritional biochemistry, conduct research in molecular nutrition and teach at a university level.

Her research project has focused on creating dental materials that can help prevent the demineralization of tooth enamel. She has worked on formulating microcapsules to add to dental materials, such as toothpaste, that can release ions to prevent tooth decay.

Hartjes is also the co-captain of the women’s tennis team, a member of the Honors Program, a CURAS ambassador and a volunteer for Tennis Buddies (a Special Olympics program in Nebraska).

The Goldwater Foundation is a federally endowed agency established by Public Law 99-661 on November 14, 1986. The scholarship program honoring Senator Barry M. Goldwater was designed to encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. The Goldwater Scholarship is the premier undergraduate award of its type in these fields.

On the tennis courts Hartjes achieved a perfect record in the month of March. She went 6-0 in both and doubles all at the No. 1 position, with the exception of one doubles match. Those records led to BIG EAST Conference honors earlier this week.

Hartjes and her teammates wrap up their 2014 women’s tennis home schedule over the next five with matches against Hastings on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT and versus Omaha on Tuesday at 12:00 p.m. CT.
