OMAHA, Neb. - Sophomore Marissa Janning tied an arena record with 38 points to push the Creighton women's basketball team to a 75-61 win over Georgetown on Wednesday, Feb. 5.
The win pushed the Bluejays to 14-9 overall and 8-3 in the BIG EAST conference, while Georgetown fell to 7-16 on the season and 1-10 in conference play.
Down 4-2 in the opening moments, Janning ignited an 11-2 run with a three-ball from the left corner. Senior Sarah Nelson followed with a trey from the top of the key. After a Georgetown bucket made it 8-6, senior McKenzie Fujan delivered a driving layup. Nelson capped the burst with her second trifecta of the game to give Creighton a 13-6 edge (13:54).
Georgetown battled back to tie the game at 17-17, but the Bluejays responded with six straight on two buckets from Janning and one from Nelson. Creighton extended its lead to double-digits late in the half, but settled for a four-point edge (32-28) at the break.
The two squads traded burst throughout the second half, with Georgetown getting as close as two points (32-30) and Creighton extending its lead to as much as 10 (50-40). Georgetown refused to go down easily, trailing 54-44 with 8:33 left the Hoyas made it a one-possession game behind a 9-2 charge.
Janning and freshman Lauren Works rose to the challenge with a combined 16 points in the final six minutes to secure the Creighton win.
Janning's 38-point outburst was a career-high and tied the D.J. Sokol Arena record set by Fujan earlier this season against DePaul (Jan. 4). Nelson closed the game with 12 points and 10 rebounds for her third straight double-double, the first Bluejay to do so since the 2008-09 season (Megan Neuvirth - 2/19 at Bradley, 2/21 at Northern Iowa & 2/27vs. Drake). Works, meanwhile, posted a career-high 10 points, including seven in the final six minutes.
Georgetown got 17 points from Andrea White, 13 points and 14 rebounds from Natalie Butler as well as 11 points from Samisha Powell.
