CHICAGO - Creighton rising junior Eric Miller was one of 22 players selected to play for the United States Under-20 National Team by head coach Tab Ramos for the 2013 Toulon Tournament from May 28-June 8 in Toulon, France.
This is the fifth time Miller has earned an opportunity to play for the U.S. National Team internationally. The Woodbury, Minn., native was also selected to play in the 2012 Northern Ireland Milk Cup, held July 21-26, 2012. Miller participated in a South American tour with the team in June of 2012. He also played with the U-20 team U.S. team in a series of international friendlies at the 2012 Marbella Cup in Marbella, Spain last October. Most recently, Miller competed with the squad at the 2013 CONCACAF U-20 Championship in February.
Miller started 19 matches for the Bluejays in 2012, logging 1,596 minutes. He collected three points on one goal and one assist this season. For his career he has one goal, three assists in 43 matches. He has started 42 matches in two seasons with the Jays while playing 3,638 minutes.
Last season he claimed All-MVC First Team and MVC All-Tournament Team honors on the field. Miller also earned CoSIDA Academic All-District VII First Team and MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team for his work in the classroom.
“It is a huge honor to be called up to play for your country and I’m excited to make my last push before the U-20 World Cup to try to earn a spot on the roster before the team heads to Turkey,” said Miller. “The tournament should be really good preparation to really figure out where we are at heading into the World Cup.”
The Under-21 Toulon Tournament is the USA’s final game preparation for the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup, which runs June 21-July 13 in Turkey.
“Obviously we’re excited for the tournament and to have this last chance to evaluate our team heading into the U-20 World Cup,” Ramos said. “We’ll have a couple players who have not been with us before and some others who we want to look at a little more as we finalize our 21-player roster. All of the players are being considered for Turkey.”
The 41st edition of the Toulon Tournament features 10 countries placed in two five-team groups. The USA is in Group A with Colombia, Congo DR, South Korea and host France. Group B includes Belgium, Brazil, Mexico, Nigeria and Portugal.
The U.S. opens the tournament against France on Tuesday, May 28, at Stade Léo-Lagrange in Toulon. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. local (12:30 p.m. CT). The group stage features four games, after which the group winners face each other in the championship match and the group runners-up meet in the third-place game. Both matches take place on Saturday, June 8.
