OMAHA, Neb. - Two unearned runs proved the Jays undoing as Creighton dropped the series finale to Omaha on Sunday, March 31, 4-2.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 14-6 on the season, while the Mavericks moved to 6-14. Creighton claimed the series from UNO with victories in the first two games on Friday (4-3) and Saturday (11-4).
Three Creighton errors led to two unearned runs for the Mavericks, the first error coming in the opening inning. Omaha's first run came via catcher's interference, nullifying an apparent inning-ending double play that would have allowed the Jays to escape a bases loaded jam. Bluejay starter, freshman Matt Warren, was able to limit the damage to just one run as he induced a foul out and a ground out to end the threat.
Omaha added to its 1-0 lead with solo home run off the bat of Ryan Keele in the top of the third, but Creighton answered with two runs of their own in its half.
Omaha manufactured a run in the fourth on a walk, sacrifice and a single to surge back out in front, 3-2. The Mavericks extended the lead to 4-2, taking advantage of a walk, a Bluejay error and an RBI ground out.
Creighton's best chance to close the gap came in the sixth as junior Mike Gerber led off with a triple into right center. Unfortunately the Jays were unable to plate Gerber, going down on strikes followed by two ground balls.
Omaha's Tyler Fox earned the win (2-1), holding Creighton to two runs on five hits in six innings. Maverick Josh Bullock picked up his fourth save of the year, allowing just two hits over the final three frames.
Warren took the loss (1-1) for the Jays, giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks in 3.1 innings.
Fitzgerald led the Jays offensively with two hits, finishing 2-for-3.
The Jays return to action on Tuesday in a midweek road game in Lawrence, Kan. at 6:00 p.m. Creighton will return to MVC play next weekend as the Jays host Bradley for a three-game set beginning Friday, April 5 at 6:00 p.m.
