Corder Leads Women's Soccer Past Jackrabbits, 3-2
BROOKINGS, S.D. - Powered by three second half goals, including two from junior Kirstyn Corder, the Creighton women's soccer team defeated South Dakota State 3-2 on Friday, Aug. 22. Creighton moved to 1-0-0 in 2014 with the victory, while South Dakota State fell to 0-1-0.
The win kept Creighton unblemished against the Jackrabbits as the Bluejays improved their series record to 9-0-1 with SDSU.
The two squads spent much of the first half feeling each other out, combining for just 11 shots in the period. South Dakota State fired the first blow in the opening five minutes, but sophomore Danielle Rice was there for the save. SDSU held a 6-5 advantage on shots taken in a scoreless first period.
With the nerves set aside in the opening period, the tenor of the match changed quickly in the second half. The Jackrabbits struck first in the 56th minute as Diana Potterveld collected a deflected shot by Rice and hammered home her second try to give SDSU a 1-0 lead.
Senior Stephanie Anasi found Corder with just a glimpse of daylight in the 66th minute to pull the Bluejays even. Anasi's pass kept Corder one step in front of two defenders, then she beat the keeper for the equalizer.
Creighton seized its first lead in the 72nd minute as junior Alyssa Jara knocked home a goal from over 20 yards out, sending the ball to the top right corner of the net.
South Dakota State didn't wait long to answer as the Jackrabbits pulled even at 2-2 on a goal from Shelby Raper, taking a cross from Potterveld and slicing it to the right past Rice.
Junior Jill Richgels took the game for the Bluejays in the 83rd minute as she brought the ball from the Creighton defensive end along the right side then sent a crossing pass to the left edge of the goal box. Corder one-touched the ball into the net for her second goal of the contest and the eventual game-winner.
Creighton outshot South Dakota State 14-11 in the second half and 19-17 for the game. The Bluejays also held a 5-0 edge on corner kicks.
The Bluejays return to the pitch on Sunday, Aug. 24 as Creighton begins its 2014 home schedule against Incarnate Word at 1:00 p.m.
