The award marks Dike’s first career MVC Player of the Week honor. It is the sixth weekly accolade claimed by a Bluejay this season alongside senior Amy Baker (March 18) and junior Becca Changstrom’s four MVC Pitcher of the Week honors.
Dike connected on two crucial homers against Wichita State last weekend to help the Bluejays secure their title. Her inside-the-park home run on Saturday provided the one-run margin for Creighton in game one.
The Lincoln, Neb., native’s second homer of the weekend in game two tied it at 1-1 with the Shockers in the bottom of the seventh and one out. It sparked a CU comeback that led to a 3-1 Creighton victory to clinch the MVC title outright.
Dike extended her career-high hitting streak to 11 consecutive games in game two of the series on Sunday with her game-tying round tripper - her second home run in two days against the Shockers. Four of Dike’s 11 career homers have come against Wichita State. She also hit homers in back-to-back games against the Shockers last season, including another inside-the-park feat.
Over five games last week, Dike hit .333 at the plate with six hits, two homers and a team-high four runs scored. She also nabbed the Jays’ only stolen base of the week and registered a perfect fielding percentage at shortstop. In the weekend series, Dike recorded a .300 batting average and posted a slugging percentage of .900 against the Shockers.
Dike leads the squad with a .393 batting average, 33 hits, 17 runs, three triples, 54 total bases, four stolen bases and 34 assists in conference games this season. She has started every league contest at shortstop this year.
Creighton hosts the 2013 MVC Softball Championship beginning Thursday at 11 a.m. at the CU Sports Complex. The Bluejays earned a bye into the semifinals and will play their first opponent at noon Friday.
