WICHITA, Kan. - The Creighton women's tennis team fell 4-1 to Southern Illinois in a Missouri Valley Tournament (MVC) quarterfinal hosted by Wichita State at the Crestview Country Club Friday afternoon.
The No. 7 seed Creighton (8-12) notched a point at No. 3 singles against No. 2 seed Southern Illinois (18-4) before the Salukis claimed the team match point.
In doubles action SIU’s Korey Love and Anita Lee knocked off the CU duo of junior Analese Snyder and sophomore Liz Vermillion 8-1 at No. 3 doubles. On court one the Saluki tandem of Melanie Delsart and Anastacia Simons claimed the doubles point with an 8-3 win over Creighton’s Jennie Hartjes and Amanda Noonan.
The No. 2 doubles match between the CU pairing of freshman Sam Anderson and senior Anna Kirshenbaum and SIU’s Natasha Tomishima and Jennifer Dien was halted at a 5-5 tie.
Up 1-0, Southern Illinois extended its lead after Tomishima defeated Snyder 6-0, 6-1 on court two. Delsart doubled up Hartjes 6-4, 6-4 at the top spot to put the Salukis up 3-0.
Kirshenbaum put Creighton on the board after a three-set victory in her final match as a Bluejay. The CU senior dropped the first set in extra games to SIU’s Anita Lee at 7-5. Kirshenbaum rebounded in the second stanza to claim a 6-1 victory and force a deciding set. Kirshenbaum claimed the final set in the same fashion as the first with a 7-5 decision to cut the Saluki lead to 3-1.
On court four, Ariadna Cairo Baza of Southern Illinois claimed the team match point. Baza edged CU’s Noonan 7-5 in set one before closing out the match 6-0 in the second.
The match was called before Vermillion and freshman Taylor Koehrsen could complete the first set of their matches on the final two singles courts.
The result marks the final MVC match for the Bluejays.
