OMAHA, Neb. - The Creighton women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss to Xavier in the 2013 finale for both teams on Saturday, Nov. 2.
Creighton closed 2013 with a 9-8-1 record and a 2-6-1 mark in the BIG EAST. Xavier also finished with an overall mark of 9-8-1, closing BIG EAST play at 2-7-0.
Saturday's match got off to a quick start as Creighton created a corner in just the third minute of play. The Bluejays, however, came away without a shot as Xavier goalkeeper, Katie Markesbery, grabbed the entry pass out of the air.
Moments later it was the Musketeers near miss as Tori Doss fired a shot from five yards out, Creighton keeper Danielle Rice made a stellar diving save. The ball, however, bounced off Rice's chest and directly back to Doss. She quickly fired off a second shot, but Bluejay sophomore Jill Richgels played the ball off her chest to keep the match, 0-0.
The game remained scoreless into halftime with both sides allowing scoring chances to slip by. Creighton held a 9-5 shot lead at the break.
The second period began with another early corner kick by the Bluejays, at 46:06. Senior Kelsey O'Donnell got a shot off on a set play, but the ball was well high. Creighton dominated the ensuing 25 minutes, extending its shot lead to 18-8, but the Bluejays were unable to take advantage.
In the 71st minute, Xavier did just that as Doss scored her fourth goal of the season. Doss played the ball off a Creighton defender from right-to-left, then beat Rice wide to the left from 12-yards for a 1-0 lead.
Just over four minutes later the Musketeers extended their lead to 2-0 as Mariah Whitaker turned a centering pass from Ashton Green into a goal from seven yards out.
The Bluejays outshot Xavier, 22-12, in the match.
Rice finished with fives saves, giving her 104 on the season. Markesbery posted her sixth shutout of the season with 12 saves.
