Jays' WBB Use Dominant Defense to Advance Past SIU, 60-43

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - The No. 2 seeded Creighton WBB team held No. 10 Southern Illinois to just nine points in the first half the  Jays downed the Salukis, 60-43, in the quarterfinals of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament on Friday, March 15.

The victory moved Creighton to 24-6 this season, while Southern Illinois concluded the 2012-13 year with a 5-26 record.

Leading 4-2 at the first media timeout (15:43), Creighton scored 19 of the next 23 points to claim a 23-6 lead. Junior Jordan Garrison ignited the run for the Jays, scoring the first five points following the timeout. Garrison converted a back-door layup, then nailed Creighton's first trey of the game to make it 9-2.

Ball movement supplied the ensuing eight points as freshman Marissa Janning nabbed a layup, junior Carli Tritz delivered a short jumper from the right corner, sophomore Alexis Akin-Otiko dropped in two free throw and junior Sarah Nelson tossed in a left-handed layup.

Once her teammates on the floor had all scored, Garrison delivered a second three-ball to make it 20-4 with 7:47 on the clock.  Following an SIU bucket, Tritz capped the run with a three-pointer from well beyond the right wing.

Creighton held SIU to just one more bucket the rest of the half to take a 31-9 lead in at the half. The Salukis shot just 3-of-19 (15.8%) from the field in the opening period, a season-low for a Bluejay opponent.

The Jays extended their lead to 25 points early in the second period at 38-13 and cruised to the 60-43 win.

Garrison and Janning led Creighton with 11 points, while junior Alyssa Kamphaus grabbed 12 rebounds. Southern Illinois got a game-high 20 points from Rishonda Napier.
