WICHITA, Kan. - Looking to claim the series sweep at Wichita State, the Bluejays fell to the Shockers 4-1 on Sunday, May 12.
The loss dropped the Jays to 28-14 overall and 11-7 in Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) action. Wichita State closed the MVC season at 15-6 and moved to 31-24 on the season.
Creighton scratched the scoreboard first in the second inning. Freshman Reagan Fowler laced a double down the left field line to lead off the frame, sophomore Kevin Lamb followed with a single through the left side to put runners at the corners. Senior Brennan Murphy plated Fowler with a sacrifice fly to left, giving the Bluejays a 1-0 edge.
Wichita State, however, bounced back with three runs in the fourth. The Shocker rally started with two outs, but a double, single, triple and a wild pitch gave Wichita State a 3-1 lead.
WSU added a run in the fourth, but freshman Will Bamesberger held the Shockers right there as he entered the game with one down and the bases loaded. Bamesberger induced an inning-ending double play to hold the deficit at 4-1.
Creighton's best chance to pull even came in the seventh as freshman Ryan Fitzgerald laced a two-out double to right center, then juniors Brad McKewon and Federico Castagnini drew walks to load the bases. Wichita State countered by bringing in closer Brandon Peterson to face sophomore Jake Peter. Peterson won the battle, getting Peter to fly out to left.
Wichita State starter, Garrett Brummett, earned his third win (3-0) of the season. Brummett held the Jays to one run on four hits in six innings. Peterson earned his ninth save of the season, recording the final seven outs.
Creighton freshman Austin Groth fell to 2-1 with the loss, Groth was saddled with all four Shocker runs on nine hits and two walks in 4.1 innings.
The Jays return home for the final four games of the regular season as Creighton will host Nebraska on Tuesday, May 14 and welcome in Missouri State for its final MVC series from Thursday, May 16 to Saturday, May 18.
