OMAHA, Neb. - The Creighton men's tennis team remained undefeated at home this season after defeating Nebraska Omaha 5-2 at the Koch Family Tennis Center Friday afternoon.
Creighton (6-4) recorded its fourth straight 5-2 decision at home this year to extend its home unbeaten streak to 4-0. Eight of the Bluejays matches, including each of the last seven, have resulted in 5-2 decisions. CU is 6-2 in those contests.
The Bluejays won the doubles point to begin the match then took four of six singles matches from UNO (4-7).
On doubles court three, CU sophomore Elliott Baker and freshman August Nysted made quick work of UNO’s Nathan Greteman and Matt Frost 8-1. CU senior Ryan Norman and freshman Nick Thompson clinched the doubles point at the top spot with an 8-6 defeat of Conner Tieszen and Carlos Ramos Salazar.
Omaha tied the match after a 6-2, 6-2 victory by Tieszen over Norman at the top singles slot. CU moved ahead 2-1 after CU’s Lee toppled Ramos Salazar 6-2, 6-2 on court five.
Mathison won his fourth consecutive singles match after defeating McKnight 6-4, 6-1 on court two and pushed the Bluejay lead to 3-1.
Maverick Connor Larson posted a three-set come-from-behind win on court four over CU freshman Quinn Dippel. The Bluejay opened the match with a 6-4 first-set victory. But Larson came back to win the second stanza 6-2 to force a deciding set. Larson carried the momentum into the third to claim a 6-0 third-set win to claim a point.
Baker secured the team match point for Creighton after his 6-4, 6-3 decision over Ellis on court three. CU freshman Anthony Rauschenbach went the distance for a victory at the No. 6 position. UNO’s Frost won the first stanza 6-4 before Rauschenbach even the match at one set apiece with a 7-6 victory in set two. In the third-set superbreaker the CU freshman claimed the Jays’ final point with a 10-6 win.
Creighton puts its unblemished home record on the line when the Jays begin Missouri Valley Conference play against No. 23 Drake on Saturday. First serve against the Bulldogs is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
