ST. LOUIS – Creighton junior Becca Changstrom earned a spot on the 2013 MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team, one of five repeat selections, announced by the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) office Monday. Fellow Bluejays Blair Lowe and Sammy Snygg earned honorable mention selections this year.
Changstrom was one of thirteen conference softball student-athletes named to the team. The right-handed pitcher owns a 3.85 GPA in chemistry. Lowe carries a 3.49 average in nursing and Snygg maintains a 3.84 GPA in exercise science.
The 2013 MVC Pitcher of the Year, recently earned All-MVC First Team and MVC All-Tournament Team honors after she won the pitching Triple Crown in Valley play in 2013 with 13 wins, 133 strikeouts and a 1.34 ERA. Changstrom, a National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Midwest Region Second Team selection, also earned CoSIDA Academic All-District VII recognition this month. This season she claimed MVC Pitcher of the Week honors four times and won MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards on three occasions.
Changstrom posted 10 strikeouts or more on 12 different occasions this season. The Lincoln, Neb., native ended the season leading the Valley in overall games for ERA (1.70), strikeouts (254), opposing batting average (.192) and wins (22). This year she joined former CU aces Tara Oltman and Tammy Nielsen as just the third Bluejay pitcher to record 200 K’s in a single season. Changstrom’s average of 8.8 strikeouts per 7 innings stands at No. 21 in the NCAA while her strikeout total of 254 ranks No. 24 nationally.
Lowe, a utility, led the team with eight doubles and eight sacrifice bunts this season. The junior ranked third on the squad with a batting average of .308, 25 runs scored, 17 walks, a .391 on-base percentage, 12 multiple-hit games and five multi-RBI contests. She ranked No. 7 in the MVC with a .364 average with runners on base. Lowe hit two home runs at Indiana State April 13-14 after coming into the weekend with one career homer. She posted a .636 average at the plate on 7-of-11 hitting at ISU that also included two doubles. The Dumfries, Va., native claimed an MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week honor on April 17.
Snygg, a senior, hit her lone home run of the season as a pinch hitter against then-No. 14 Florida on Feb. 8. The utility ranked fourth on the team in assists and seventh on the squad for putouts this season. Snygg notched the second stolen base of her career this season against then-No. 21 Tulsa on March 2.
CU was 18-7 when she started at third base this year. She made three pitching appearances in relief this season with four strikeouts in six innings and a 3.50 ERA.
Creighton, the 2013 MVC regular-season champion, finished the year with a record of 29-18.
Nine of the twelve MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team members were also selected to the 2013 MVC Softball All-Conference Teams with five being on the All-Conference First Team and four on the Second Team. In all, seven conference schools are represented on the first team.
In order to be eligible, student-athletes must have at 3.2 GPA or higher, be at least a sophomore in athletic and academic standing and meet certain playing requirements.
