Dippel Claims Conference Athlete of the Week Honor

ST. LOUIS – Creighton men’s tennis freshman Quinn Dippel earned Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Athlete of the Week honors after posting a perfect 4-0 singles record on the Bluejays’ Florida road swing last week.

The weekly award is the first for Dippel. It also marks the first honor for Creighton men’s tennis since Billy Paluch was recognized during his junior year on March 13 last season.

Dippel posted four consecutive victories during Creighton’s week-long road trip in the Sunshine State. The freshman extended his career-long win streak to five matches, all at the No. 5 singles spot. During his unbeaten streak that started March 1, Creighton owns a 3-2 overall record.

Two of Dippel’s wins came in three-set matches decided by two games in the deciding set. His pair of straight-set victories were also close in the second stanza, as Dippel claimed decisions by three games or fewer.

“Quinn played exceptionally well at big moments for us last week,” head coach Tom Lilly said. “He had to battle against tough competition in each match and it was great to see him come through with a win in all four.”

The Lindsborg, Kan., native opened last week against Cameron Amyot of Fairfield on March 11. After claiming the first set 6-2, Dippel surrendered the second 6-3. The Bluejay clinched the match in extra games at 7-5.

On March 12, Dippel doubled up Juan Andres Hirmas of Robert Morris in a pair of tight sets 7-5, 7-5.

Dippel won another three-set affair against Wesleyan’s Zachary Brint on March 13. The Bluejay edged Brint in a first-set tiebreak 10-8 to clinch the set at 7-6. Brint rebounded to claim the second set at 6-4 to force a deciding set. In the finale, Dippel reversed the second-set tally to claim the match at 6-4 in the third.

In the final match of the road trip, Dippel closed the week with a perfect record by defeating Daniel Etman of Valparaiso in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.

Dippel, a singles specialist, is 6-3 this season overall including a 5-2 mark at the No. 5 spot. He leads the Bluejays with six singles wins in 2013. Dippel has yet to play in a doubles match this spring.

Creighton (5-4) is set to open MVC competition this weekend at Southern Illinois (8-2) in a match slated for 11 a.m. CT on Saturday.
