McDermott Picks Up Rupp Trophy; Signs Autographs in Return to Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. -- Former Creighton men's basketball standout Doug McDermott had a productive Tuesday while returning to his alma mater.

The recent first-round pick and current member of the Chicago Bulls started his afternoon by picking up the Adolph F. Rupp Trophy in an event held before media at The Championship Center. Two members of the Commonwealth Athletic Club, Ron Heiert and Tony Bailey, drove up Kentucky to hand-deliver the award.

McDermott then spent the next two hours at D.J. Sokol Arena, where he signed autographs for the public in a benefit for several Omaha charities. Hundreds of people lined up for their chance to get an autograph from one of college basketball's recent greats, as the line stretched from the Ryan Athletic Center entrance all the way down Florence Blvd., and past the main entrance to Morrison Stadium.

McDermott won 14 National Player of the Year accolades during a senior season that saw him lead the Bluejays to a third straight Round of 32 NCAA Tournament appearance, as he topped the nation in scoring with 26.7 points and added a team-high 7.0 rebounds per game.

McDermott finished his career fifth in NCAA history with 3,150 career points and was the first male to be named a First Team All-American by the Associated Press since 1985.
