COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Creighton softball team dropped a doubleheader by scores of 11-6 and 2-1 at No. 13 Missouri on the Tigers’ University Field Tuesday afternoon.
Creighton (26-23) led game one 5-0 early but Missouri (40-13) responded with five runs in the bottom of the next two frames to take control of the game. The Tigers held the Jays off the scoreboard in game two until the final at-bat when senior Alexis Cantu drilled a home run to left center field to break up a no-hit bid. Sophomore Blake Ringle led CU with two hits on the day.
Cantu started game one in the circle for the Bluejays.
Creighton started the scoring in the top of the first inning with two outs on the board. Senior Ellen Homan reached on an error with one out and sophomore Erin McGonigal came on to run at first base. She would move to third on a steal and a wild pitch. Cantu drew a walk to put runners on the corners with two outs.
CU sophomore Blake Ringle singled through the left side to score McGonigal. Freshman Ally Sutton pinch ran for Cantu. Freshman Allie Reinhart walked to load the bases as sophomore Cassie Sharon pinch ran for Ringle. Freshman Jen Daro drew a hit by pitch to bring across a run and make it 2-0 Bluejays.
Creighton junior Bri Lingl cleared the bases with a three-RBI single to left field to put the Jays up 5-0 early.
Missouri tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the second. A single started it off for MU and an RBI double made it 5-1 Creighton. A Tiger one-out single scored another run to make it 5-2. A CU error, two singles, three steals and an RBI double tied the game at 5-5.
A solo home run by Ringle put Creighton back in front a 6-5 in the top of the third. CU senior Brittany Telecky came on to pitch in the bottom of the third inning for Cantu.
The No. 13 Tigers exploded for five more runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 10-6 lead. Missouri started the inning with a single, steal and RBI single to even the score at 6-6. A two-out homer added two more for an 8-6 score. An RBI double plated another run.
