MBB Finishes With Highest Ranking in 39 Years; Dominates Stat Leaders

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's basketball team has been ranked 20th in the year-end poll released by the USA Today and voted on by 32 coaches nationwide after Monday's national championship game. The No. 20 ranking is the program's best year-end mark in the coaches poll since being No. 16 in 1974-75.

The No. 20 spot marks an improvement of one spot over the No. 21 postseason coaches poll ranking in both 2011-12 and 2012-13. This week's poll marks the 12th straight week that Creighton has been ranked by the coaches, and 14th time overall in the recently completed 2013-14 season.

Creighton also finished in the top-10 of 10 different team statistical categories and seven different individual categories.

The Bluejays led the nation with a 1.80 assist/turnover ratio, a figure that ranks second-best in history since the NCAA began tracking the category in 1993. Only the 2005-06 West Virginia team has been better.

Creighton also led the nation in three-point percentage (.414) and three-pointers made (356), while placing second with 10.2 three-pointers per game. This is the first time in program history Creighton has led the country in three-point percentage, and comes on the heels of campaigns where CU finished second in 2012-13 and third in 2011-12. Creighton's 356 three-pointers in 2013-14 ranked 11th-most in NCAA history.

CU's 17.5 assists per game ranked second nationally, while the club was third with 859 three-pointers attempted. The Jays were fourth in both field goal percenage (.497) and assists (614), and also finished 10th in fewest turnovers per game (9.8).

Last but not least, Creighton was also fifth nationally with 17,896 fans per home game. That figure trailed only Syracuse, Kentucky, Louisville and North Carolina nationally, and would rank ahead of 16 different NBA franchises. After a 16-0 home campaign this winter, Creighton's 18-game home win streak entering next season is the nation's eighth-longest active streak.

Individually, Doug McDermott became Creighton's first player to lead the nation in points per game (26.7 ppg.), and for the second straight year he led the country in points scored (934). McDermott also ranked second in field goals made (330) and field goal attempts (627), while placing ninth in three-point percentage (.449).

Senior forward Ethan Wragge was also in the top-10 in a pair of categories. He was fifth in three-point percentage (.470) and also eighth in three-pointers made (110).

Creighton finished the 2013-14 season with a 27-8 record while advancing to the third round of the NCAA Tournament for a third straight season.
