OMAHA, Neb. - Four players posted double-figures, led by 23 from Marissa Janning, as the Creighton women's basketball team led start to finish against Marquette in their 83-64 win on Saturday, Jan. 25.
The win extended the Bluejays' home conference winning streak to 14 game, while Creighton moved to 12-8 this season and 6-2 in BIG EAST action. Marquette fell to 13-5 overall and 4-3 in conference play.
The Bluejays and Golden Eagles spent the opening moments feeling each other out. Creighton opened the game with a three-ball from Janning, but Marquette tied the game at 3-3. Knotted at 11-11, Creighton took control behind with a 9-2 burst. Senior Jordan Garrison opened the run with a three-pointer from the right wing, following a Marquette layup Janning dropped another trey from deep and freshman Brianna Rollerson delivered a traditional three-point play to make it 20-13 (12:54).
Marquette trimmed Creighton's advantage to five at 22-17, but junior Sammy Jensen took control. The Iowa native scored seven straight Creighton points to push the Bluejays out to a double-digit advantage, 29-19. Jensen nailed a three-pointer from the left wing to make it 25-17, after two Golden Eagle free throws, Jensen answered with four free throws on consecutive possessions to make it 29-19. Creighton run grew to 11-2 as Rollerson and Janning each converted driving layups to push the Bluejays lead to 33-19 (5:36).
Creighton led by as much as 19 (42-23 at the 2:21 mark) and took a 44-27 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Bluejays lead grew to as much as 22 (59-37 - 13:52) early in the second half, but Marquette trimmed the gap to 13 with just under six minutes remaining at 70-57. The Bluejays put the game out of reach via a 7-0 run as Janning sandwiched layups around a trifecta by senior McKenzie Fujan.
Janning's 23 points led all scorers, while Rollerson delivered her first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Fujan and Jensen rounded out the Bluejays in double-figures with 11 and 10 respectively. All 10 of Jensen's points came in the first half.
Creighton returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 28 as the first round of BIG EAST play concludes with a game at Seton Hall at 6 pm (CT).
