Basketball Surges in Polls as McDermott Repeats BIG EAST Honor

OMAHA, Neb. -- Doug McDermott repeated as BIG EAST Conference Player of the Week, and unbeaten Creighton Men's Basketball continued to rise in the national polls, it was announced on Monday.

One of 51 remaining unbeaten teams, Creighton is off to a 4-0 start for the third straight season after Saturday's 82-72 win vs. Tulsa.

The Bluejays rose three spots in the Associated Press poll to a season-best 20th, and climbed a national-best five spots in the USA Today coaches poll to 18th. Michigan State and Kansas lead both polls. Notably, this week marks the first time that Creighton, Iowa and Iowa State are all ranked at the same time in the AP poll.

Including this week’s poll, Creighton has been ranked 30 times in 61 weeks of AP polls under Greg McDermott, and ranked between 26th-to-28th in seven other polls. The 30 weeks in the top-25 under McDermott is more than any coach in Bluejay history.

Doug McDermott had 33 points and 15 rebounds against Tulsa in his lone game last week. McDermott made 9-of-17 shots, including 3-of-7 from downtown, and also drained 12-of-15 foul shots. He also added two assists and tied a career-high with two steals.

McDermott’s 33/15 line made him the nation’s first player this season with a game of 30+ points and 15+ rebounds, and it was CU’s first 33/15 contest since Bob Harstad had 33 points & 17 rebounds on Dec. 6, 1989 vs. Cleveland State.

Creighton held a narrow 42-41 lead at halftime before McDermott scored eight points during a 15-6 Bluejay spurt to open the half. After Tulsa made it a five-point game with less than 2:20 remaining, McDermott had eight points and a pair of defensive rebounds down the stretch as CU iced its fourth straight win to open the season.

This is McDermott's 15th career Conference Player of the Week honor, and second consecutive from the BIG EAST to start his senior campaign. His first 13 honors coming from the MVC office. He also earned MVC Newcomer of the Week accolades seven times as a freshman in 2010-11, meaning he's now earned a Player or Newcomer of the Week award in 22 of 51 weeks as a collegian.

Creighton plays three games this week at the Wooden Legacy in California, beginning with a 10 pm Central tilt vs. Arizona State on Thursday. The Sun Devils, also unbeaten, are 34th in this week's AP poll. Fellow Wooden Legacy participants Marquette (No. 25) and George Washington (one vote) are also receiving votes in the AP poll this week.
