PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 25 Creighton men’s soccer team completed its regular-season schedule with a 2-1 setback at BIG EAST rival Providence on Friday afternoon.
The downfall locks Creighton (9-7-2, 4-4-1 BIG EAST) into the No. 5 seed of the BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Championship that begins next week. Ironically, the Bluejays will remain in New England to take on Providence (11-4-2, 6-3-0 BIG EAST) again in a BIG EAST quarterfinal on Tuesday, Nov. 12. The Friars secured the No. 4 seed with their victory.
Providence got on the scoreboard first. After Creighton was cited for a handball in the box, PC’s Anthony Baumann connected on a penalty kick at 28:57 to make it 1-0 Friars. That score would hold through the rest of the half.
The Friars led 7-3 in shot attempts in the first half. PC also led corner kicks 4-1 at the break.
Late in the second half, Creighton sophomore Myles Englis scored his second career goal in the last two matches on a cross from junior Jose Ribas to knot the score at 1-1 with just under 12 minutes left in regulation.
Providence answered five minutes later with a goal of its own to yield the final score. Mac Steeves scored his third of the season for PC with an assist credited to Friar goalie Keasel Broome.
The Friars finished the match with a 12-shot advantage of 18-6 and led corner kick attempts 5-1.
CU junior goalkeeper Alex Bolowich finished with seven saves but dropped to 7-6-1 overall while Providence’s Broome improved to 11-4-2 on the year with the win.
The Bluejays begin postseason play on the road at Providence on Tuesday in a BIG EAST quarterfinal match.
