Cross Country Teams Post Best Finishes Of The Fall

NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D. -- The Creighton men finished fourth and the women second at the Briar Cliff Invite at the Adams Nature Reserve on Saturday. Briar Cliff, Sioux Falls, Wayne State, Dakota Wesleyan and Morningside were among the schools who participated in the invite.

Sioux Falls finished first on both the men’s and women’s side. 

Sioux Falls’ Matt Horan finished the 8K run first overall with a time of 24:45. Katie Smelker of Mount Marty won the women’s event with a 17:42.

Newcomer Maddie Ivy led the Bluejay women in the 5K run. She finished second with a time of 17:51, the program's best time in a 5K meet since Angela Fisher ran a 17:41 on Oct. 16, 2004.

Courtney Sawle finished fourth with a personal-best time of 18:05. Emily Peterson clocked in at 19:13 and finished 13th. Vanessa Miller finished one second and one spot behind Peterson. Rounding out the top five Bluejays was Emily Mauser, who finished 20th with a time of 19:24.

For the men Garrett Kenyon was the top Bluejay. He finished second with a time of 24:57. That clocking was CU's fastest mark in an 8K mark since John Krumsee turned in a 24:52 race on Oct. 27, 2007.

Drew Prescott finished 20th with a time of 26:30. Tin Nguyen placed third for the Jays. His time of 26:38 was good enough for 22nd place. Patrick Reinschmidt finished 23rd with a time of 26:40.  Eric Klein finished 39th with a time of 27:17 to finish in the men’s top five. 

The Jays compete in the Bradley Classic on Oct. 18 in Peoria, Ill.
