DES MOINES, Iowa – The Creighton women’s tennis team opened its fall schedule with five wins on the opening day of the Drake Fall Invitational Friday.
Junior Jennie Hartjes and freshman Katherine Nelsen each led the way for Creighton with a pair of victories. Hartjes advanced to the second round of the Flight A singles draw after a 6-1, 6-3 over Callie Ronkowski of North Dakota.
In doubles, Hartjes and Nelsen teamed up for an 8-1 victory over a duo from Northern Iowa in the first round of the Flight A doubles bracket. Later in the day, the Jays’ pairing dropped an 8-6 decision to a doubles team from Drake in the second round of Flight A.
Nelsen also claimed a first-round singles win in Flight B over Omaha’s Kenzie Hill.
CU freshman Simone Hussussian claimed her first singles win at Creighton after a 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 victory over Amanda Dick of Drake in Flight C.
In doubles Flight B, junior Liz Vermillion and sophomore Karlin Naslund paired up to capture an 8-2 victory in the first round before dropping an 8-1 decision to a tandem from Iowa State in round two.
All eight Bluejays were in action on day one of the Invitational. Second-round singles action and third-round doubles main draw play continues on Saturday as well as consolation matches throughout the day at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
