The Creighton women’s basketball team announced its non-conference schedule for 2013-14 on Wednesday, July 31. The Jays face four teams that appeared in the NCAA Tournament and at least two more that made the WNIT Tournament a year ago before starting its first season in the BIG EAST Conference.
“Our at-large selection last year was a product of consistently playing a tough non-conference schedule,” said 12th-year head coach Jim Flanery. “The BIG EAST Conference will be a challenge and our schedule should help prepare us.”
The Jays open the 2013-14 regular-season with a familiar foe as Creighton travels to Des Moines, Iowa to face the Drake Bulldogs on Nov. 8. The Bluejays took both meetings with Drake last season, but the matchup in Omaha was down to the wire (W, 67-66).
The home schedule begins on Nov. 12 as the Jays host South Dakota State, followed by a shot at revenge against Minnesota on Nov. 17. Last season Creighton bested the Jackrabbits (63-54) in Brookings, S.D., but fell to the Golden Gophers (81-88) in double overtime.
The Jays return to the road on Nov. 20 to face off with Kansas, then welcome Houston on Nov. 23 and South Dakota on Nov. 26.
December kicks off in Norman, Okla., as the Jays return to the site of their 2012 NCAA Tournament run to face Oklahoma.
Creighton welcomes in BYU on Dec. 7, the Jays 65-62 overtime road win catapulted the Jays to a six-game winning streak.
The battle with Nebraska comes on Dec. 14 in Lincoln; Creighton's last road victory versus the Huskers came in 1993. The Jays, however, downed Nebraska 66-57 last season in Omaha.
The non-conference schedule concludes with a three-game tournament in Las Vegas, Nev., from Dec. 19-21. The pairings for the Las Vegas Tournament have not been announced, but other teams in the tournament include; Clemson, DePaul, Oregon State, Pittsburgh, Washington and UNLV.
The Jays will play one home exhibition contest against Fort Hays State, game time and date will be announced in the near future. Game times will be finalized in the coming months and updated on GoCreighton.com once confirmed. Creighton’s BIG EAST Conference schedule is expected to be released around Labor Day.
