CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- The Creighton men’s golf team finished its spring campaign in eighth place at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships. The championships were played at the par-72 7,175-yard Dalhousie Country Club in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
The Jays finished with a team score of 929 (315-314-300). Wichita State won their sixth straight Missouri Valley title by shooting an 858 (288-281-289). Illinois State came in second with an 890 (297-296-297) and Southern Illinois (304-296-296=896) finished third.
Wichita State finished with four golfers in the top four and five in the top 20, led by Rafael Becker who finished with a 210 (74-68-68) to win medalist honors. Teammate and defending champion Hunter Sparks finished second, shooting a 214 (72-71-71). In a three-way tie for third with a 217 were Wichita State’s Calvin Pearson (73-70-74) and Louis Cohen Boyer (69-72-76) and Drake’s Devin Leland (68-77-72).
Ben Lowman led the way for the Jays. The senior finished tied for 17th with a 228 (75-78-75). Johnny Spellerberg was the second best Jay golfer in the tournament. The sophomore finished tied for 26th with a 230 (80-77-73). Freshman Steffen Lake finished tied for 37th with a 239 (81-82-76). Senior John Rasmussen (T-41st, 84-82-76=242) and junior Daniel McKernan (44th, 79-77-87=243) had strong showings at the Championships.
Joey Johnson of Missouri State was named the Newcomer of the Year. Wichita State’s Hunter Sparks was named the Golfer of the Year and Wichita State coach Grier Jones was named the Coach of the Year. Quinn Vilnneff of Evansville won the Elite 18 Award.
The All-Conference team included Wichita State teammates Rafael Becker, Louis Cohen Boyer, Tyler Gann, Calvin Pearson and Hunter Sparks, Missouri State’s Joey Johnson, Brandon Cauldwell of Southern Illinois, Drake’s Devin Leland, Wils Hawn of Illinois State and Quinn Vilneff of Evansville.
The Bluejays will return seven golfers for the 2013-2014 campaign.
