EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Bluejay Baseball team dropped the opening game of a doubleheader with Evansville, 4-1, on Saturday, March 23.
The loss evened Creighton's Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) record at 1-1, while the Jays fell to 11-5 overall. Evansville also moved to 1-1 in the MVC and 9-13 on the season.
Evansville got single runs in the first and the second via a safety squeeze from John Day in the first and a sacrifice fly by David Patton.
The Purple Aces added to their lead on an RBI single by catcher Chris Pearson.
The Bluejays pushed across a run against Evansville's Kyle Lloyd in the sixth when freshman Reagan Fowler plated sophomore Jake Peter with an RBI single through the right side. Peter reached on a fielder's choice as he forced junior Federico Castagnini on a grounder to second.
Unfortunately that was all the offense Creighton could muster as Lloyd held the Jays to one run on five hits in seven innings to pick up the win (3-2). Purple Aces closer, Jake Naumann, allowed just one hit in the ninth to earn his fifth save of the season.
Creighton starter, senior Nick Musec, fell to 0-3 this season with the loss. Musec allowed three runs on six hits and two walks in 5.2 innings.
Peter and Fowler led the Jays offense with two hits.
The two squads will wrap-up the three game series with the second game of the doubleheader later today.
