ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Ethan Wragge of Creighton University and Jessica Diamond of Wichita State University have been selected Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today. Wragge and Jensen were honored for their performances during the period of January 7 through January 13.
Now in its 14th year of existence, The Valley’s Scholar-Athlete program honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.
Ethan Wragge averaged 14.0 points and 6.0 rebounds as Creighton men’s basketball picked up a pair of lopsided victories. He made 9-of-13 shots from the field (69.2 percent) and was 7-of-11 from downtown (63.6 percent).
Wragge’s week started when he tied a career-high with 22 points in 17 minutes during a 91-61 win over Drake. He made 6-of-9 three-point shots in the contest and was 8-of-11 overall from the floor.
He finished off his week with six points and tied his season-high with seven rebounds in a 22-point road win at Missouri State, making 1-of-2 shots from the field and all three attempts from the line. Wragge holds a 3.22 grade-point average as a Finance, Marketing and Entrepreneurship major.
Diamond led WSU to a pair of gritty road wins at Bradley and UNI to give the Shockers a 3-0 start in the Valley for the second-straight year. She scored 27 points over the two games to move into WSU’s top 10 all-time scoring list with 1,275 points. At Bradley, Diamond tied for the team lead with 14 points while dishing out four assists and collecting two steals.
Two days later at UNI she again topped the team in scoring, this time with 13 points, while grabbing six rebounds and handing out five assists. She nailed two free throws in a one-and-one situation with 20 seconds remaining to seal the 60-57 WSU victory. Diamond carries a 3.27 GPA in Psychology.
To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
