Program Record 16 Three-Pointers Lead Jays WBB over Evansville, 70-63

EVANSVILLE, Ind.-  The Creighton Bluejays tied a program record with 16 three-pointers as the Jays downed Evansville 70-63 on Saturday, Jan. 5.

The win pushed the Jays to 10-3 on the season and 2-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC).  Evansville, meanwhile, fell to 3-10 overall and 1-1 in the MVC.  The win was also marked the 200th career victory for head coach Jim Flanery.

While basketball is typically a game of runs, this contest took that to the extreme.  Evansville opened the game on an 18-2 run in the first six minutes, only to have the Jays answer with a 16-2 run of their own to make it 20-18 with 8:56 remaining in the first half.

Down 18-2 it was freshman Marissa Janning that kick started her team with back-to-back triples.  Junior  Sarah Nelson got in the act by sandwiching three-pointers around another by Janning to make it a 20-18 contest.

The Aces ended the half with the edge, taking a 39-34 lead in at the break.  The Bluejays were buoyed in the opening period by the three-point shot as Creighton was 9-for-21 (42.9%) beyond the arc and 2-for-9 (22.2%) otherwise.  Evansville was also hot from three-point land in the opening period, nailing 7-of-12 (58.3%) from long distance.

Creighton continued the trend to open the second half as the Jays took control of the game with an 21-2 run in the first nine minutes to build a 55-41 lead with 11:05 left in the game.  All 21 Bluejay points came from beyond the arc, led by nine from senior Ally Jensen.

Down the stretch the Jays held Evansville at bay as Janning finished with a career-high 22 points and A. Jensen tied a career-high of 18 points. The Jays held Evansville to just 25.8% in the second half, including just 1-of-13 (07.7%) from downtown.

As a team the Jays finished 16-of-37 (43.2%) from beyond the arc and 21-of-58 (36.2%) from the field.

This marks the fourth time the Jays have knocked down 16 trifectas, including against South Florida on Dec. 22, 2012.  The Jays also knocked in 16 against UC Davis on Nov. 27, 2009 and again on Dec. 6, 1989 versus Oral Roberts.

Creighton returns home to host Illinois State in its MVC home opener on Friday, Jan. 11 at 7:00 p.m. in D.J. Sokol Arena.
