ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Freshman Marissa Janning was named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week on Monday, Dec. 3. The award recognizes Janning for her play during the week of Nov. 26- Dec. 2.
Down by 16 at half to BYU (35-19) on Nov. 28, Janning spearheaded the Jays’ comeback 65-62 (OT) win, dropping 17 of her career-high 19 points in the second half. Janning was 6-of-11 in the second half, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. She also posted four rebounds and two assists in the contest, logging 33 minutes.
Janning’s play was critical down the stretch as she scored six of the Jays’ final 10 points in regulation to send the game into overtime. Her traditional three-point at 2:12 pulled Creighton even at 54-54 for the first time since early in the first period.
Named Minnesota Miss Basketball as a senior, Janning has appeared in each of the Jays' first five contests. She and the rest of the Bluejays (3-2) will be looking for their first home win of the season on Wednesday, Dec. 5 as Creighton hosts No. 25 Nebraska at 7:05 p.m.
The contest with the Huskers will be the third consecutive home game against a ranked opponent for the Jays.
