Ribeiro Claims Third MVC Weekly Honor of the Season

ST. LOUIS (Oct. 29) - Creighton men's soccer senior Andrew Ribeiro claimed Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Defensive Player of the Week honors for his efforts in the Bluejays' 1-0 win over Missouri State last weekend, the conference announced Monday.

Ribeiro's conference accolade is the third of his career and in 2012. The MVC previously honored the senior co-captain this season on Oct. 15 and Sept. 4.

The senior from Green Bay, Wis., attempted one shot and played every minute of the Jays' 1-0 victory over the Bears on Saturday, Oct. 27. Ribeiro and the CU defense have held CU's opponents scoreless for seven of the last eight games dating back to Sept. 25.

Ribeiro has played all but eight minutes this season for the Bluejays leading CU to at least a share of its third straight MVC regular season title in 2012. The last score allowed to an MVC opponent by Ribeiro and CU defense came in the conference opener last season on Oct. 12, 2011 versus Missouri State - over 1,272 minutes in league play.

Creighton's shutout defense could set an MVC team record for the fewest goals allowed in a conference season. Three teams including CU's 1995 squad share the all-time low record of two goals allowed in a conference season. The Jays logged their 12th consecutive shutout of an MVC opponent in their last victory over MSU Oct. 27.

The Jays' also held their opponent off of the scoreboard for the fifth consecutive match at Morrison Stadium. The last score allowed by CU at home came Sept. 22 versus St. Louis in the 83rd minute. It's been over 473 minutes since Creighton allowed a goal on its home pitch.

The Bluejays extended their season-best win streak to seven matches last week and finished the month of October undefeated at 7-0. CU is also unbeaten in its last eight contests with a 7-0-1 mark.

Creighton has already wrapped up a first-round bye for the league tourney and could clinch the regular-season title outright at Evansville this Saturday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. The Purple Aces are also in contention for a first-round bye in the MVC Tournament.

A win or a tie over UE gives Creighton the outright MVC regular-season title and the No. 1 seed overall at next week's conference tournament hosted by Bradley in Peoria, Ill.
