ST. LOUIS (Oct. 24) - Creighton men's soccer sophomore Jose Ribas earned Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week honors Wednesday for his performance during the Jays' pair of home wins last week.
Now in its 14th year of existence, The Valley's Scholar-Athlete program honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.
This week's award is the second time Ribas has earned the MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week in his young career.
A sophomore from Guayaquil, Ecuador, Ribas posted his fourth assist of the year on teammate Jose Gomez's game-winning score in a 3-0 win over UMKC Oct. 16. His four assists ranks second on the team and in a tie for fourth in the MVC this season.
Ribas, who has a 3.60 cumulative grade point average in business, also played a vital role on defense. Creighton has held opponents scoreless for six of the last seven matches dating back to September 25, including a 1-0 victory over Bradley Oct. 20.
To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
