MINNEAPOLIS (Oct. 19) - Creighton men's tennis senior Billy Paluch started play at the 2012 Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Central Regional Championships with wins in both singles and doubles action Friday at the University of Minnesota's Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
In the singles main draw, Paluch knocked off MVC rival Arthur Romanet of Bradley in straight sets during a first-round match. The Jay used extra games to claim the first set at 7-5 then blanked the Brave in the second stanza 6-0 to advance.
Paluch lines up across the net from another MVC opponent Saturday. The senior faces No. 8 seed Matheus Pereira of Wichita State in the second round.
In doubles action, Paluch teamed up with fellow senior Ryan Norman to roll over Patrick Hammers and Bradley Holt of Western Illinois 8-1 in a first-round match to advance.
Later in the day Norman and Paluch fell to MVC foes Badr Cherradi and Johnny Rigby of Southern Illinois 8-4 in a second-round battle.
Norman dropped his first-round singles match to Minnesota's Mathieu Froment on the Gopher's home court 6-0, 6-1.

The Central Regional Championship is one of 12 USTA/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men taking place this weekend on campuses throughout the country. The singles and doubles champion from each regional gain automatic entry into the 2012 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships Nov. 8-11 at the indoor facilities at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
