Volleyball Wins Fifth Straight, Reaches MVC Turn With 8-1 League Mark

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Heather Thorson had 12 kills as the Creighton Volleyball team won its fifth straight match, a 3-0 sweep at Indiana State, to close the first half of the MVC season tied for first place with an 8-1 league mark.

Scores of the match were 25-20, 25-18, 25-22.

Creighton's 17-3 overall record is two games better than the program's previous best record after 20 matches. The win was Creighton's 14th sweep vs. ISU in the past 15 meetings.  Indiana State dropped to 3-16 and is 1-8 in Valley action.

"I'm real proud of our effort this week considering that some of our girls were stressed out with midterms," said head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth. "You never know how that will affect things, but to their credit they played hard and we were able to earn a couple more road wins."

Creighton fell behind by as much as five (12-7) early in the first set before regrouping to take its first lead at 15-14. The Jays would steadily pull away from there, taking the set, 25-20. Thorson had four kills while Kate Elman paced the defense with five digs in the first set.

The Jays took a 2-0 lead into intermission after winning the second set, 25-18, as Thorson produced four more kills.

The third set was deadlocked at 6-6 before an 8-1 run from the hosts surged ISU's lead to 14-7. Creighton clawed back, eventually retaking the lead at 22-21 after consecutive ISU attack errors. The Jays would close out the match on a kill from Kelli Browning.

Thorson had four kills in all three sets, finishing with 12 kills on .385 hitting. Leah McNary added eight kills on .438 hitting as part of a balanced Bluejay attack. Elman led the Jays with 11 digs, while Browning and Melanie Jereb each recorded three blocks. Creighton finished with 36 kills, three aces, 45 digs and eight blocks on .225 hitting.

ISU was paced by nine kills from Cassandra Willis, who also hit .615 in 13 swings. Erika Nord dished 26 assists to quarterback the Sycamore offense, while Ashlen Buck had 13 digs to lead all players. ISU finished with 34 kills, two aces, 49 digs and three blocks on .070 hitting.

Creighton will begin the second half of the MVC slate next Saturday with a 7 pm match at Drake.

"We just met with the team and re-evaluated our goals," said Booth. "I told them that the team that has great chemistry, is selfless, and gets  better in the gym will win the league. Our chemistry and selflessness is fantastic. It's now just a matter of getting better every day in the gym."
