ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Five Creighton basketball games, including three men's and two women's contests, are part of the league's 36-telecast, in-house television package on FOX Sports Midwest in 2012-13, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today.
The Valley, with Niles Media Group of Kansas City serving as its production company, has worked in conjunction with FOX Sports Midwest -- along with its sister regional cable outlets FOX Sports Indiana and FOX Sports Kansas City -- and Comcast SportsNet Chicago to clear all basketball and Olympic sport telecasts.
FOX College Sports will also distribute all basketball and Olympic sport championship telecasts on a national basis.
Creighton will have women's basketball games on Jan. 21 (at Missouri State) and Jan. 25 (home vs. UNI) air on the league's television package, in addition to men's basketball games on Jan. 2 (at Illinois State), Jan. 23 (at Drake) and Jan. 30 (home vs. Missouri State).
"It’s hard to believe that it’s been 20 years since the league made the decision to bring its television network in-house, but it was the right move," said Elgin.
"The MVC TV Network, thanks to partners like FOX Sports, FOX College Sports and Comcast SportsNet Chicago, remains our most visible marketing and promotional tool for our programs, coaches and student-athletes," Elgin added.
"In the electronic media world, it’s unique to have a relationship with a television entity that feels like an extension of your own staff, but we have that with FOX Sports Midwest and SVP/General Manager Jack Donovan," said Jack R. Watkins, MVC Associate Commissioner. "The trio of FOX, Comcast and FCS provides Valley brand recognition regionally as well as nationally."
This season, the Valley will have a 20-game regular-season men’s and women’s basketball package, which begins on Dec. 30 with Northern Iowa visiting 2012 MVC regular-season men’s basketball champion and NCAA Tournament participant Wichita State.
The remainder of the men’s basketball regular-season package features eight games in January and four games in February and culminates with a Wildcard Weekend contest on Saturday, March 2.
The 2013 MVC Men’s Basketball Championship in St. Louis on March 7-10 will feature nine high definition telecasts, including the title tilt on CBS Sports on March 10.
Both opening-round games on March 7, four quarterfinal games on March 8 and both semifinal tilts on March 9 from Arch Madness will air on FOX Sports Midwest, FOX Sports Indiana, FOX Sports Kansas City, FCS and Comcast SportsNet Chicago.
"The recognition by our telecast partners of the tremendous basketball played in our league provides clearances of all nine games from our men’s basketball tournament," said Elgin.
"CBS Sports’ continued commitment to air our title game is testimony to the strength of our basketball," Elgin concluded.
The Valley will televise six regular-season women’s basketball games on the MVC TV Network -- UNI at Illinois State on Jan. 4, Southern Illinois at Indiana State on Jan. 17, Creighton at Missouri State on Jan. 21, UNI at CU on Jan. 25, UNI at Wichita State on Feb. 8 and a Wildcard Weekend telecast on March 3.
"Our women’s basketball has made strides in the last couple of years, and this package of contests is an opportunity to promote that improvement," said Elgin. "That slate of games concludes with the league tournament which will continue to feature a ‘winner-takes-all’ excitement."
The 2013 MVC Tournament semifinals (March 16) and title game (March 17) from The Family Arena in St. Charles, Mo. -- site of the postseason event for a sixth-straight year -- comprise the tournament coverage.
In addition to basketball, The Valley will air its postseason title matches or games for women’s and men’s soccer, volleyball, softball and baseball on the MVC TV Network.
"Having the resources to televise the title matches/games for soccer, volleyball, softball and baseball plus our women’s basketball championship demonstrates the commitment by our schools to funding broad-based programs," said Elgin.
"To highlight our top teams at the key points in their seasons and to promote our student-athletes are vital to each sport’s at-large resume for NCAA consideration," Elgin surmised.
The Valley will televise title matches from the MVC Women’s Soccer Championship from Morrison Stadium in Omaha, Neb., on Nov. 4, and the MVC Men’s Soccer Championship from Shea Stadium in Peoria, Ill., on Nov. 11.
The league will telecast the title match of the MVC Volleyball Championship from Hammons Student Center in Springfield, Mo., on Nov. 24.
In the spring, the Conference will televise the championship game of the 2013 MVC Softball Tournament from CU Sports Complex at Omaha, Neb., on Saturday, May 11.
The Valley will conclude its 2012-13 TV schedule on Saturday, May 25,
with the telecast of the title contest of the 2013 MVC Baseball
Championship on Saturday, May 25, from Duffy Bass Field in Normal, Ill.,
for the first time.
Creighton fans can expect additional men's basketball announcements in the coming days with broadcast schedules of some of the school's local television partners.
