Scouting the No. 24 Creighton Bluejays (6-3-2, 0-0-1 MVC):

Creighton snapped a three-game winless streak with a 1-0 victory over Loyola-Chicago Oct. 2 at Morrison Stadium. The Jays open their home conference slate Saturday Oct. 6 against Southern Illinois Edwardsville.

With the shutout win over Loyola-Chicago, the Jays have now held opponents scoreless in two consecutive contests following a 0-0 draw at Drake in the Missouri Valley Conference opener Sept. 29. Creighton entered this week ranked No. 39 nationally with a 0.4 shutout percentage.

Creighton looks to extend its shutout streak this weekend. The Bluejays logged their eighth consecutive shutout of a Valley opponent in the tie with the Bulldogs. The last goal surrendered to an MVC opponent by the Jays came in the conference opener last season (Oct. 12) to Missouri State at 22:54. It has been 897:06 since Creighton allowed a goal to an MVC foe.

Freshman Timo Pitter scored the game-winning goal in the 52nd minute to lift the Bluejays over the Ramblers, his third goal of the year. Pitter is on a hot streak having scored in each of the previous three Jays’ home games and has accounted for three of the last four Creighton scores overall.

Pitter leads the Jays’ offense with eight points on the year with his trio of goals and a pair of assists. Other CU offensive leaders include senior Jose Gomez with seven points (two goals and three assists) and junior Sean Kim with six points (three goals)

Scouting the Southern Illinois Edwardsville Cougars (8-3-0, 0-0-0 MVC):

After a 3-2 home victory over Nebraska-Omaha on Oct. 2, Southern Illinois Edwardsville improved to 8-3 overall this season. The Cougars open Missouri Valley Conference play against the Jays Saturday in Morrison Stadium.

It marks the return of SIUE to Omaha after the Cougars participated in the Bluejays’ Ameritas Classic earlier this season. SIUE went 1-1 that weekend with a 1-0 defeat of Rutgers (Aug. 31) and a 2-1 loss to No. 7 Akron (Sept. 2).

The Cougars are 2-1 in true road games this season. SIUE is undefeated (8-0) when scoring first in 2012 but is winless (0-3) when the opponent records the first score. SIUE has posted a shutout victory in six of 11 contests this season and entered the week ranked No. 8 nationally with a 0.6 shutout percentage.

Cougar senior Peter Kelly scored the first two goals for SIUE against UNO. He is on a scoring streak, accounting for four of the last seven Cougar tallies. Kelly leads the team with 12 points and is tied for the SIUE lead with five goals this season.

SIUE sophomore Christian Volesky shares the lead in goals with Kelly at five and senior Jared Tejada boasts seven points with a pair of goals and three assists.
