Women's Tennis Sends Pair To Finals At Drake Fall Invitational

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Nine victories in singles play highlighted Saturday's action at the Drake Fall Invitational for the Creighton women's tennis team. Liz Vermillion and Amanda Noonan will each play for the title of their respective singles flights on Sunday morning at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.

"I thought it was another solid day," said CU head coach Tom Lilly. "It was good to see Amanda (Noonan) and Liz (Vermillion) pull through in their three-setters. I think we had six three-setters throughout the day and it showed the improvement that we've made in our strength & conditioning and what we'll have to continue to work on this year. It was also good to have Karlin (Naslund) & Sam (Anderson) win their first collegiate match in singles play."

The D Flight saw Vermillion win twice and advance into the finals. The sophomore beat South Dakota's Nina Barudzic in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3 before a 6-0, 6-7, 6-4 win over Northern Illinois' Stephanie McDonald. In Flight A singles action, Jennie Hartjes shook off an 0-6, 6-4, 6-3 loss to Drake's Klavdija Rebol in her first match to post a 6-4, 6-3 win over USD's Hafsa Laraibi.

In Flight C, Sam Anderson shook off a 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 loss to Drake's Mariel Ante in the morning to defeat South Dakota's Michelle Elkin 6-2, 6-1 later in the day.

In Flight E Taylor Koehrsen won 6-1, 6-0 over NIU's Ilse Pacheco, then was blanked 6-0, 6-0 against Drake's Maddie Johnson.

In action late Friday, Creighton's doubles wins on late Friday included Anderson and Jennie Hartjes claiming the Flight A doubles consolation title with an 8-6 victory over South Dakota's Elkin and Laraibi to wrap up a 2-1 weekend.

In Flight C doubles action, Naslund and Vermillion also wrapped up a 2-1 weekend with an 8-4 triumph over South Dakota's Nina Barudzic and Maddy Warder.
