Creighton Postgame Quotes

Head Coach Ed Servais

“I thought we played pretty well after the 2nd inning. We got off to a little bit of a slow start. It’s something that we talked a lot about this week, that we couldn’t afford to get behind UCLA because of their strong pitching. But you’ve got to give their starting pitcher a lot of credit. He threw the ball inside, he threw it up. He did some of the things we talked about before the game. He was very effective. We didn’t have many good swings against him, and we had a few in the later innings, but their center fielder made some outstanding plays. I congratulate UCLA on a well-played game, and I’m looking forward to playing tomorrow.”

(on the team’s difference between now and when they played Sacramento State earlier in the year) “We’re a much, much, much better team than that day you saw us at Sacramento State. We’re not even close to that same team. Again, getting down 3-0 after two innings, a lot of teams might have gave in a little there and maybe lose 7 or 8-0. We had a chance going into the eighth or night inning. That’s all you can ask for when you play a team the caliber of UCLA. Can you get to the later part of a game with a chance? I thought we did, especially in that 7th inning. I thought we hit the ball as well as we can. They just made good plays. This team is not going to do that, this program will not allow that to happen. We’ll play very hard tomorrow against San Diego; you’ll see that. You saw that in the second half of this game. It started with the guy on the hill, Ty Blach, who wasn’t going to give up many more runs with the idea that his offense was going to come back and score.”

(On if the last few weeks keeps him encouraged that his team will respond): “They’ll respond tomorrow. Trust me. They’ll respond. They’re not going back to the club they were six weeks ago. They’re stronger. They’re going to play a good game tomorrow. We came in here with the idea that we’re going to come in here and force UCLA to beat us. Creighton didn’t lose tonight; UCLA won the game. There’s a big difference between the two. That’s why I congratulate UCLA. UCLA earned what they got tonight. That was our goal coming in. We were hoping we could scratch a couple more across than they did, but they won the game. When we play San Diego tomorrow, San Diego is going to have to win the game. We’ll show up; we’ll be in fine shape tomorrow. Trust me on that.”

Junior Pitcher Ty Blach

“They got a couple of two-out base hits there, I left a few pitches up with guys on base, and they made me pay for it. They’re really good hitters, I left a couple of balls over the plate and got myself into a couple of bad counts there, and they made me pay for it.”

(On if he was nervous): “Not really. I felt pretty relaxed going into the game. I’ve been here last year, I kind of knew what to expect and was able to calm myself down before the game. I just put myself in a couple of bad situations early with a couple of bad pitches there, and they did a good job.”

Senior Catcher Anthony Bemboom

(On Plutko): “Like Coach said, he was throwing the ball up effectively. As a hitter it looks good coming out of his hand. We knew he was going to pitch up and leave balls up before the game, but we didn’t make the adjustments that we needed to in order to get to him. We had a couple of good swings in the seventh inning where we did get the ball down below our hands. That’s all you can do – try to score a runner.”

(On Blach’s early innings) “Those two-out hits, he left a couple of pitches over the plate, and they didn’t miss the pitch. Give credit to them; they put good swings on it, put it in the left center gap. He just missed his spot a little bit, and they took advantage. But after that, he came back, pitched real well and made good pitches and kept us in the game. That’s all you can ask for in our starting pitcher.”

(On his 7th-inning at-bat) “I thought it was going to be in gap for sure. But they had me shaded a little in right center. He got a good read on it. It didn’t carry as much as I thought it would.”
