ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- For the sixth time in the eight-year existence of the award, Creighton University has been recognized with the Missouri Valley Conference All-Academic Award.  Bluejay student-athletes posted a 3.33 cumulative grade-point average over the 2009-10 academic calendar, the school's best mark ever.  Creighton previously shared the award in 2003-04, and were the outright winners in 2004-05, 2006-07, 2007-08, and last year.

The NCAA recently introduced a new tool for the evaluation of the academic quality of participating programs. The Academic Progress Report is intended to gauge the progress student-athletes are making to degree completion and graduation. In the spring of 2010 Creighton had four teams post multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports: men's golf, women's cross country, women's golf and women's volleyball.

Creighton had 144 student-athletes make the Dean's List at least once last year, including 71 student-athletes who earned the honor both semesters.  One hundred one of Creighton's 232 student-athletes (43.5 percent) earned a 3.50 GPA or better during the spring 2010 semester, while 16 student-athletes (6.9 percent) earned perfect 4.00 GPA's during the spring 2010 semester and  175 student-athletes (75.4 percent) earned a 3.00 GPA or better in the spring semester.

Eleven teams (women's basketball, crew, men's cross country, women's cross country, men's golf, women's golf, women's soccer, softball, men's tennis, women's tennis and volleyball) had team GPA's of 3.20 or better and every team owns a cumulative GPA of 2.74 or better.

Creighton tied for the national-best among men's cross country programs with a cumulative 3.67 GPA.  Creighton received the 2010 American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award for having a team GPA of 3.34 last spring and a 3.37 cumulative GPA. CU volleyball also won the award in 1998, 1999, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.  And Creighton owns 32 CoSIDA Academic All-American honors. Last year softball pitcher Tara Oltman became Creighton's first female to be named a three-time Academic All-American.

The MVC All-Academic Award was first recommended by the league faculty representatives in hopes of recognizing institutional academic excellence.  The MVC Joint Committee quickly took its lead to establish this prestigious award.

The conference academic excellence award is based on the average student-athlete grade-point average for the academic year.  The GPA calculations are tallied for all student-athletes in MVC-sponsored sports who compete, practice or receive athletic aid during the academic year.
