OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton women’s basketball team was honored Tuesday when the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced its winners for the 2009-10 Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll.  With a team grade point average of 3.506, The Bluejays ranked fifth in NCAA Division I, tying their highest honor received by the WBCA.  The award is handed out to teams throughout the nation that carry the highest GPA for the entire season, based on the nomination submitted by WBCA-member head coaches.

The Bluejays have now earned the WBCA Academic Top 25 Honor four times in head coach Jim Flanery’s eight seasons at the helm.  The ranking of fifth is the highest under Flanery and the best since the 1995-96 team also ranked fifth in Division I.  The Jays have ranked in the top-10 four times now, ranking sixth following both the 1997-98 and 1996-97 seasons.

“It’s a statement to the quality of the student-athlete we get at Creighton,” said Flanery. “We are certainly proud of how seriously our players take the academic side of things and we’ll continue to recruit student-athletes who excel both on the court and in the classroom.”

Creighton is one of three Missouri Valley Conference institutions honored, all of which cracked the top-10.  Indiana State narrowly edged Creighton for fourth place with a 3.508 GPA and Northern Iowa finished seventh with a 3.464 GPA.

Four of Creighton’s five starters earned multiple academic honors during the 2009-10 season.  Kellie Nelson, Megan Neuvirth, Sam Schuett and Kelsey Woodard were all voted to the CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VII Team and MVC Scholar-Athlete Teams for their stellar grade point averages.  Katie Frank was joined by Schuett and Woodard with perfect 4.0 GPAs during the spring semester.  Nelson posted a 4.0 GPA in the fall semester, while Neuvirth, Schuett and Woodard each had 3.9 GPAs in the fall.

Creighton not only excelled in the classroom, but posted a 20-win season for the third straight year, finishing 21-11 overall after advancing to their sixth WNIT postseason in the last eight years.
