Nelson Tabbed MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week
ST. LOUIS - Adam Templeton of Drake University and Kellie Nelson of Creighton University have been selected the Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today. Templeton and Nelson were honored for their performances during the period of January 11-17.
Now in its 11th year of existence, The Valley’s Scholar-Athlete program is sponsored by Prairie Farms, Roberts and Hiland Dairies. On a weekly basis, the Conference honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.
A center for the Creighton women’s basketball team, Nelson, a junior from Omaha, averaged 21.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per contest and shot 85 percent (17-of-20) from the field, as the Bluejays posted triumphs at Evansville (63-37 on Jan. 14) and at Southern Illinois (84-62 on Jan. 16).
The MVC Player of the Week, Nelson, who has a 3.88 cumulative grade-point average in mathematics and a minor in biology, scored a career-high 19 points at Evansville on 8-of-9 shooting from the field, including seven-straight makes to start the game. At SIU, she established a new career scoring-high with 24 points.
To qualify for Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing. Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
