ST. LOUIS –Ethan Finlay and Kyle Deremer of the Creighton men’s soccer team have been named the Missouri Valley Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, as announced by the league office Monday. Finlay scored the Bluejays’ only goal in a 1-0 win over No. 7 UCLA, while Deremer was the key in limiting the Bruins’ high-powered attack to just two shots on goal in the victory.
Finlay, a sophomore from Marshfield, Wis., scored in the 50th minute to provide the winning margin over the seventh-ranked Bruins. The forward now has a team-leading seven goals on the year, including an MVC best five game-winners. Of his 13 career goals, nine have been game-winning scores.
Deremer had a remarkable match from his center back position, helping to shut down one of the nation’s leading scorers – Kyle Nakazawa. The Bruin forward, who entered the match ranked in the top 11 in goals per game and points per game in the NCAA, did not even attempt in a shot in the Creighton win. The Jays allowed just one shot in the first half and out-shot the Bruins 12-5 in the contest, with only two of UCLA’s shots going on goal. Deremer, a junior from Omaha, has started all 14 matches for CU in the back this year, helping the Jays to eight shutouts and a 0.47 goals against average.
Creighton (7-3-4, 4-2-3 MVC) concludes the regular-season with a match at Drake (10-6-1, 5-3-0 MVC) this Saturday. The Bluejays and Bulldogs will kickoff at Des Moines’ Cownie Soccer Complex at 7 p.m.
