OMAHA, Neb. -- Sharon Hanson, one of the most successful coaches and administrators in Iowa prep history, has been named an Associate Athletics Director at Creighton University. In her new role, Hanson will serve as CU's Senior Woman Administrator and oversee Creighton's women's sports programs.

'I am tremendously excited about the addition of Sharon Hanson to our staff as Associate Athletics Director,' said Creighton Director of Athletics Bruce Rasmussen. 'Sharon has 32 successful years of athletics experience involving coaching and administrative leadership. She has an extraordinary work ethic and commitment to excellence and strong family values and character. I am confident that Sharon will help us to strengthen our community support and be a highly effective leader for our coaches and student-athletes.'

Hanson and her husband, Bob, have paired to form one of the top coaching combinations in Iowa high school athletics history. The duo has coached girls' basketball for 32 years and won five state titles. Along the way, they have been named Conference Coaches of the Year 13 times, Iowa Coaches of the Year four times and were tabbed National Coaches of the Year in 2003.

Hanson has coached a variety of teams and activities since graduating from Iowa State University in 1971, beginning with a stint from 1972-76 in North Polk (IA). From there, the Hanson's spent six years at Des Moines East, where their 1979 basketball team won the state title with a 30-0 record. They also mentored state runner-up teams in both 1980 and 1982.

In 1982, the Hanson's went to Des Moines Dowling High School, where they built a basketball dynasty over the next 21 years. Dowling won state titles in 1992, 1996, 1998 and 2000 while they became the first Iowa coaches to win five state basketball titles. Hanson was also Physical Education Department Chairwoman for 12 years and chaired the 'MAC' a booster club for girls basketball that raised over $25,000 per year.

In 2002-03, Hanson and her husband left Dowling to go to Waukee High School in suburban Des Moines. A year later, they returned to Des Moines East, where she is currently a Special Education teacher and resource room coordinator. She also serves on the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union Board of Directors.

Hanson will start at Creighton on July 1st after completing the academic year as a teacher and coach at Des Moines East High School.
