Furlong Promoted to Assistant Baseball Coach

OMAHA, Neb. - Creighton University and head baseball coach Ed Servais announced that Brian Furlong has been promoted to an assistant coach, on Tuesday, July 29. Furlong served as the director of baseball operations for Creighton during the 2013-14 academic year and held a similar role at the University of Iowa in 2012-13.

Furlong's will have responsibilities both with the Creighton pitching staff and will be heavily involved with recruiting.

"I was impressed with what Brian did for our program last year as the director of baseball operations," said Servais.  "He is hard working, has familiarity with our program both as a player and as a member of the staff.  Those qualities made him one of the first guys I thought about when our opening came about."

In addition to his role as director of baseball operations over the past two seasons, Furlong has owned or operated baseball academies since graduating from the University of Iowa in 2005.  Furlong played at Iowa State in 2001, Creighton in 2003 and completed his playing days at Iowa in 2004-05. Furlong was recognized academically in all three conferences. He was a Big 12 Scholar Athlete (2001), a Missouri Valley Conference Scholar Athlete (2003) and an Academic All-Big Ten honoree (2005) with the Hawkeyes.

"I have spent several years working to put myself in a position such as this and I am very excited to grow as a member of the Creighton program," said Furlong.  "I've worked and played for coach Servais and I am honored to continue the tradition of excellence that has been set."

Furlong graduated from the University of Iowa with a bachelor’s degree in political science with an emphasis in American institutions. Furlong takes over the role vacated by Tom Lipari, who left the Bluejays to pursue other opportunities in June.

As a prep at Iowa City High, Furlong was an elite all-state selection as a senior. He was also a two-time all-state, all-district and all-conference selection. As a senior, he went 7-1 on the mound with a school record 0.37 ERA in guiding the Little Hawks to a 31-10 record.

Creighton also said goodbye to associate head coach Spencer Allen as he accepted a similar role with Illinois late last week.

"First off I’d like to thank Ed Servais for the opportunity to coach at Creighton University," noted Allen. "I’d also like to thank the Creighton support staff that I had the pleasure work. The relationships myself and my family formed made this a very difficult decision."

Servais indicated that a search to fill the vacancy created by Allen would begin immediately.
