OMAHA, Neb. - Former Creighton men’s tennis player, Billy Paluch, earned the 2013-14 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award. The BIG EAST Conference announced the 21 winners Tuesday recognizing student-athletes for academic and athletic achievement as well as community service.

Paluch was one of nine unanimous 2014 All-BIG EAST selections. It marked the second all-conference honor for the graduate student after his recognition on the All-Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Select team in 2011-12.

He became the first Bluejay to be ranked nationally (No. 91) prior to the start of his senior year in the first Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) men's national singles rankings on Jan. 4, 2013.

Paluch finished his career with the most combined career wins (149) at Creighton. He also claims the most doubles wins (76) in program history.

Off the court Paluch was just as successful, earning the Carl M. Reinert, S.J., Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2014. Previously Paluch claimed MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team honors twice and ITA Scholar-Athlete First Team recognition on two occasions. Paluch also logged 50 hours of community service during his time at Creighton.

The Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST sponsored sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who have attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are chosen by the BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Representative Council.
