Baseball Drops BIG EAST Championship to Xavier, 5-0
BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Creighton Baseball team suffered a 5-0 defeat in the BIG EAST Tournament Championship game, falling to Xavier, on Sunday, May 25.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 32-17-1 on the season, while Xavier earned the automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament with the win and moved to 29-27 overall.
Xavier took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third on three walks, a hit batter, a single and a two-base error.
McKewon led off the fourth with single to left, unfortunately he was stranded at third. Creighton's only other threat came in the seventh as Lopez and Lucansky delivered back-to-back two-out singles to put runners at first and second. Senior Cody Kottich, however, was retired on a fly out to center to end the Bluejays' threat.
The Musketeers added a single run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to put the game away.
Xavier's starting pitcher, Trent Astle, went the distance allowing just three hits and one walk for the win (5-4). Creighton sophomore Taylor Elman suffered the loss (2-6), surrendering two runs on three hits and four walks in 2.2 innings.
