OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton Baseball outhit Omaha 8-5 on Tuesday night at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha, but it wasn't enough as the Mavericks used timely hitting to notch a 4-1 win over its crosstown rival.
Creighton dropped to 20-13-1, while UNO won its fourth consecutive contest to improve to 20-13.
Clayton Taylor homered on the sixth pitch of the game, pulling a Taylor Elman offering just inside the right-field foul pole, and the Mavericks never trailed. Visiting UNO added two runs in the third inning on a two-out single up the middle from Brett Bass to make it 3-0.
The Mavericks added an insurance run in the sixth frame when Alex Schultz and Bass had consecutive doubles.
After stranding a runner at third base to end each of the first two innings, Creighton wasted a golden scoring chance in the seventh inning. Reagan Fowler led off with an infield single, only to be cut down at the plate on an 8-4-2 relay throw home on a double off the wall in right-center by Brett Murray. Murray would later be stranded at third after Sam Murphy relived starter Zach Williamsen and notched consecutive strikeouts to escape the jam.
CU finally broke through in the eighth inning against Josh Bullock. Fitzgerald doubled down the left-field line, and later scored on Mike Gerber's double down the right field line. An error put the tying run at the plate in Murray, but he flied out to left on a 2-2 offering.
Fitzgerald had three hits, while Murray and Fowler each had two hits for CU, but the Bluejay offense was 2-for-13 with runners on base and 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position.
Creighton used eight pitchers on the mound, but Elman (2-4) would be tagged with the loss after allowing Taylor's first-inning homer.
Williamsen upped his record to 2-2 after 6.1 innings of scoreless ball, allowing six hits and one walk. UNO's fourth pitcher of the night, Anthony Falcone, notched his third save of the season, after retiring the Bluejays in order in the ninth.
Creighton returns to action on Wednesday night when it hosts Iowa. First pitch is scheduled for 6:36 p.m.
