Baseball Falls To Nebraska, 5-4, in 10-Innings
LINCOLN, Neb. - The Creighton Baseball team suffered a 5-4 extra-inning loss to the Huskers on Wednesday, March 19 in Lincoln. The two squads will continue their annual three-game series on April 8 and again on April 29 at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 9-6-1 in 2014, while Nebraska moved to 12-7 on the season.
Nebraska grabbed a 2-0 lead with single runs in the third and fourth innings on a solo home run from Ben Miller in the third and a sac fly by Austin Christens in the fourth.
Creighton answered with three runs in the fifth, taking advantage of Husker reliever Jeff Chesnut who entered the game at the start of the frame. Sophomore Ryan Fitzgerald led off with a walk, then freshman Nicky Lopez sent him to third with a single to left. Junior Jake Peter followed with an RBI single to center, sending Lopez to third. Senior Mike Gerber tied the game on a sac fly to left. After a walk to sophomore Reagan Fowler moved Peter into scoring position, junior Kevin Lamb gave Creighton a 3-2 lead via a single to right.
The Bluejays penchant for using the bullpen held Nebraska in check into the seventh, but the Huskers knotted the game at 3-3 thanks to an RBI single from Steven Reveles.
The game remained tied at 3-3 into the tenth when Creighton seized the lead on a walk to sophomore Brett Murray, a single from senior Cody Kottich, a walk to senior Brad McKewon to load the bases. Murray scampered home as Nebraska closer, Josh Roeder, uncorked a wild pitch.
Peter came on to shut the door in the tenth, but after getting two outs he surrendered three straight singles. Nebraska was able to take the game as the Huskers used their running game to nab second twice in the inning, setting up RBI singles from Christens and Jake Placzek.
Roeder earned the win (2-0) by recording the final two outs of the tenth, while Peter took the loss (1-1).
Creighton returns to action on Friday, March 21 as the Bluejays host Fresno State at 6:35 pm in the opening game of a three-game set with the Bulldogs.
