JONESBORO, Ark. - The Creighton baseball team settled for a series win over Arkansas State as the Bluejays fell to the Red Wolves, 6-2, in the series finale on Monday, March 10.
The loss ended Creighton's seven game undefeated run as the Bluejays fell to 6-5-1. Arkansas State moved to 7-8.
After Creighton took the opening two games, which were played in Millington, Tennessee due to poor field condition, the third game of the series was moved back to Arkansas State's home field in Jonesboro, Ark.
The return home seemed to inspire the Red Wolves pitching staff as three Red Wolves' pitchers combined to hold Creighton to just two hits.
Arkanasa State took a 1-0 lead with a single run in the bottom of the second. As the Bluejays had done all series long, Creighton answered in the top third as Joey Mancuso drew a leadoff walk, Kevin Lamb singled and Brad McKewon plated Mancuso on a ground out.
The Red Wolves, however, responded with three runs in the bottom of the third . Arkansas State tacked on two more in the fourth to extend the lead to 6-1.
Creighton tried to rally in the fifth as Lamb and Ryan Fitzgerald reached with two out walks, then McKewon drove home his second run of the game with a single to left field. That, however, was the end of the Bluejays' offense.
Morgan Croft recorded the win (1-0) with 4.1 innings of scoreless relief for the Red Wolves, while Creighton's Tommy Strunc suffered the loss (0-2) as he allowed four runs on four hits and two walks in two innings.
The Bluejays return to action on Tuesday, March 11 against Central Arkansas in Conway, Ark. at 2 pm.
