Late Rally Not Enough As Softball Falls at UTA

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Creighton Softball team, winners in walk-off fashion on Saturday afternoon, got a taste of its own medicine just hours later as host UT Arlington handed the Bluejays a 6-5, walk-off defeat at the UT Arlington Hilton Invitational on Saturday evening.

Creighton falls to 4-5 on the young season and will wrap up play in Arlington on Sunday with a 9 am game vs. Illinois (9-3). UTA improved to 8-5 with its second win in as many nights over Creighton.

The Bluejays dented the scoreboard first. Jessica Lewis doubled with two outs and came home on pinch-hitter Cassie Sharon's single to right.

Creighton retained its lead until the fifth inning, when Jolene Schaefer homered for the second time in as many days against CU, knotting the score at 1-all.

Creighton took a 3-1 lead after a pair of unearned runs in the top of the sixth inning. Bri Lingl reached on an error to lead off the inning, then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Lingl then scored on a single by Blake Ringle to give CU a lead. Alex Millspaugh, running for Ringle, would later score on a hit by Kelsey Allender that saw trail runner Lewis thrown out at the plate and the score 3-1.

Leftfielder Britnea Barilli, who had the outfield assist in the top of the sixth, started UTA's four-run rally with a single, one of six straight women to reach safely. The Mavericks tied the score at 3-3 on a fielders choice, then took the lead when Schaefer singled to right to score Meagan Michele. UTA added an insurance run on a sac fly to right.

Down to its last chance in the seventh, Creighton would rally. One out walks to Liz Dike and Alexis Cantu proved beneficial as Lingl doubled to right-center to deadlock the score at 5-all. A pair of flyouts would strand Ringle at second.

UTA would win the game in thrilling fashion. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Michele deposited a 1-0 offering from Becca Changstrom over the right-field wall for a walk-off homer.

Both teams had seven hits in the game. Creighton's Lewis was 2-for-2 after entering the game 1-for-11 on the young season, while Barilli, Michele and Schaefer each had multiple hits for UTA.

Changstrom (2-3) suffered the loss, allowing five earned runs and two walks in the complete game setback.

UTA used three pitchers in the contest, with Brittany May (1-0) picking up the win despite allowing two hits, two walks and two runs in 1.2 innings of work.
