McDermott A Finalist For Senior CLASS Award

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Creighton senior Doug McDermott headlines a list of 20 men’s and women’s basketball student-athletes who excel both on and off the court that were selected as finalists today for the 2013-14 Senior CLASS Award® in collegiate basketball. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

The finalists were chosen by national media from the list of 30 men’s candidates and 30 women’s candidates announced in October. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help select the winner. Fans are encouraged to vote on the Senior CLASS Award website through March 24. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches’ votes to determine the winners. The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2014 NCAA Men’s Final Four® and NCAA Women’s Final Four®.

McDermott is averaging 25.3 points and 7.1 rebounds per game while helping Creighton to a 19-4 record and No. 18 national ranking. He owns eight games of 30 or more points, has hit a pair of game-winning baskets, and is also considered a top contender for the Wooden Award, Oscar Robertson Trophy and Naismith Award.
