FLASH QUOTES- DIRECTV WOODEN LEGACY
GAME 4: Creighton 88, Arizona State 60
Creighton Coach Greg McDermott -“I’m not sure we can play much better. We took advantage of some mismatches that we thought we had early, especially when we went with Ethan Wragge and Doug McDermott together on defense and that put them in some tough spots. I thought we guarded them well and Austin Chapman did a great job on Jahii Carson making him work to get his shot. I think the culmination of that over 40 minutes wears on a guy. Devin Brooks gave us a great and very productive 19 minutes on the offensive end and a good job defensively. I’m really pleased to take a team as talented offensively like Arizona State and hold them to only 60 points; I would have thought that was impossible.”
“To (Devin Brook’s) credit he has been in the gym a lot because he understands his ability to get to the basket and guys going underneath ball screens leave him that shot and tonight he made Arizona State pay for it.”
“San Diego State is so versatile defensively it seems like there all 6’3 to 6’7, they switch a lot of screens, and they put a lot of pressure on you which force you out of your rhythm. It’s going be a challenge and we’re going to have to prepare for the full court challenge. We have great respect for Coach Fisher and what he has done with that program at SDSU. What really got our program going was a game at San Diego State a few years ago when we were down 17 and we ended up winning that game. That game is the game that we can point to and notice that this team is going to be special. It’s going to be a war and we look forward to the opportunity to play.”
Creighton Forward Doug McDermott -“My dad said it best that is the best we could have played offensively and defensively. Arizona State is a great team and they’re going to go far, but it was our night and we were clicking on all cylinders.”
“We did the same thing last year against Arizona State we got off to a great start and they trickled their way back into the game, but this time we didn’t allow that to happen. We know they’re a team that’s capable of putting points on the board really fast keeping so we knew we needed to keep our composure. I think Isaiah Zierden’s four-point play at the end of the half was big for our confidence going into the locker room.”
“(Devin Brooks) He’s been in the gym, it’s great to see that hard work pay off. If teams let him shoot those he’s going to be hard to guard because you know how good he is getting to the rim and creating open looks for our shooters. It’s a big game for Devin and his confidence and we’re lucky to have him”
“We should have kept running our game in transition to start the second half. We got off to such a great start and our energy was off the chart. I haven’t played that hard of defense for 10 minutes in my career. Now we know what it takes to put a whole game together defensively.”
“SDSU is very versatile defensively and they do a great job on defense pressuring you and they’re going be fired us to play us since we beat them a couple years ago so that’s going to be in the back of their minds. It’s already 11 am here and we need to get off our feet and get ready for them with such short preparation.”
Arizona State Coach Herb Sendek -"Obviously we were outplayed in every facet of the game. I thought Creighton was very good as we expected they would be. As for us, we're very disappointed in our performance."
"They're a difficult team to match up with because of the versatility that McDermott has. He literally scores literally in every fashion all over the court. So, it really starts with him. He's surrounded by very good shooters and they play a small lineup a great deal where the court is spaced. So, when they go with Wragge and McDermott, without a conventional big guy, it could be a very difficult matchup for a lot of teams.
"We maintain all the time, that we're a next play, a next game program. No one win makes us and no one loss are demise. Our guys have great character and tremendous pride and I fully expect our guys led by to the young man on my right, Jahii, will bounce back and be ready to go to tomorrow."
Arizona State Guard Jahii Carson -"I give them credit to the whole team, not just one man. They loaded the paint and made it tough for us to drive and penetrate due to the lack of our ball movement. We didn't follow the game plan of moving the basketball because we knew coming into the game that they were going to load the basketball, swipe, reach and take charges. Not following the game plan on my end and my teammates, which caused us as a team to not be able to score the type of scoring that we're able to do."
