OMAHA, Neb. -- Averaging 36.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in two wins that propelled Creighton to its first outright MVC regular-season title since 2001 have helped Bluejay forward Doug McDermott earn various honors from the league and nation.
McDermott was named MVC Player of the Week on Monday. It's his record eighth such honor this season, and his 13 career accolades are one behind Hersey Hawkins for most in league history.
The junior was also named as one of 14 finalists for the 2013 Oscar Robertson National Player of the Year Trophy. The reicipients for that award are announced on April 5 in Atlanta and presented on April 15th. Finalists include Anthony Bennett (UNLV), Trey Burke (Michigan), Michael Carter-Williams (Syracuse), McDermott, Ben McLemore (Kansas), Victor Oladipo (Indiana), Kelly Olynyk (Gonzaga), Mason Plumlee (Duke), Otto Porter (Georgetown), Marcus Smart (Oklahoma State), Russ Smith (Louisville), Deshaun Thomas (Ohio State), Jeff Withey (Kansas) and Cody Zeller (Indiana).
McDermott had 32 points and 11 rebounds in Wednesday’s 80-62 win at Bradley, making 12-of-17 shots and all seven free-throw attempts. On Saturday, he electrified the second-largest crowd in Creighton history (18,613) with 41 points, six rebounds and three assists in a 91-79 win over Wichita State. McDermott made 15-of-18 shots from the floor and 5-of-8 from long-range while also making all six attempts at the stripe. For the week, he shot 27-of-35 from the floor (77.1 percent), including 6-of-12 three-pointers (50 percent) and 21-of-23 shots from two-point range (91.3 percent). He was also perfect on 13 foul shots.
McDermott is the first MVC player since Hersey Hawkins (1986-88) with consecutive 700-point seasons, and he now leads the nation with 724 points this season. He averages 23.4 points and 7.6 rebounds per game while shooting 86.6 percent from the line and 48.1 percent from three-point range. He is The Valley's only player with multiple games of 41+ points since at least 1996-97, and is now averaging 29.0 points per game on 61.9 percent shooting from three-point range in seven games this season vs. top-50 RPI teams.
Creighton (24-7, 13-5 MVC) will be the No. 1 seed in this week's MVC Tournament and open play at 12:05 pm on Friday against either Bradley or Drake.
